Frequently Asked Questions
Do you sell retail?
No. We are a wholesale company only however we would be happy to help you find a shop in your area or recommend a suitable mailorder shop near you.
Do you have a conversion chart from an other company to The Gentle Art?
Unfortunately, we do not have a conversion chart to give you. Since our threads are hand-dyed using a random process and the colors are blend-able and shaded, it is very difficult to compare our thread to another company. Our threads have subtle color changes, shading, and handworked care.
One of our colors could easily match 2 or 3 colors of another company. In the case of a fixed dye brand like DMC or Anchor, we have found that one of our skeins could easily match 3 to 4 colors. With 223 colors in our palette, that could be well over 500 to 600 conversions.
Also, we do not have the access or the resources to carry other companies thread for comparison so any comparisons we would be making would be via the Internet and unreliable.
The best suggestion we can make is for you to go to your local cross stitch store. They have access to more threads and are very knowledgeable and should be able to assist you with the conversions. If your local store is not a viable option or there is not one near you, our shop locator may help we would be more than happy to recommend a shop that will assist you.
You could also contact the designer for assistance. They would also have a great deal of knowledge with regard to conversions. If you need assistance in finding a local retailer or contacting the designer, please let us know.
Comparing colors is based more on personal preference. A color that we think is appropriate might not fit your personality and feelings at the time. Having the freedom of picking your own colors for your project allows you to give your project the uniqueness that it deserves.
What base do you use?
We will not reveal the source of our base thread as we consider it part of the formulation, however, you can be assured our thread comes from a high-quality thread manufacturer.
Do you have sample swatches?
Unfortunately, we do not have a color card or sample swatches. Color cards can be very expensive to produce and because our thread is overdyed through a random process, it is very challenging to provide a one-inch color swatch that is a true representation of a skein of our thread.
The product photos on our website are adjusted on a color-calibrated monitor to reflect accuracy. We cannot, however, guarantee the accuracy of your own display. Note that smartphones can often over-saturate colors.
What's the difference between Sampler Threads and Shaker Threads?
The Shaker threads are more muted. With the exception of a few colors, the Shakers are less variegated and they typically will be more muted and have more subtle tones (more mid-range tones).
What product do you sell?
We are purveyors of “gently” overdyed 6-strand cotton embroidery floss called “SAMPLER THREADS™” and “SIMPLY SHAKER ™” threads.
We also have a fine wool blend single-ply thread called “SIMPLY WOOL™” threads.
Our threads are exciting and fun to stitch with and give your needlework a faded, antiqued look. Your needlework projects stitched with “SAMPLER THREADS™” will never be a carbon copy of everyone else’s because each skein is unique in itself.
Is your thread colorfast?
What are your care instructions?
It is safe and actually recommended to rinse our Sampler Threads in tepid water BEFORE stitching. Blot them on a white paper or terrycloth towel to make sure they are free from surface dye that could be trapped in the fibers. Our threads are colorfast by industry, meaning that they will not change color when washed, will not fade if kept out of direct sunlight, etc.
You may repeat this process several times until they rinse clean. Again, the color will not fade. Let the threads dry (it won’t take long) and then stitch.
We recommend that you never use a steam iron on a finished piece to get rid of any wrinkles regardless of the thread or the fabric. If the needlework does need pressing, it should be placed on a dry neutral color bath towel, face side down, and lightly pressed with a dry iron.
Working with our Threads
Working with overdyed floss is a fun experience. We developed our Sampler Threads and Simply Shaker threads especially to give new pieces an aged appearance. The thread colors are muted; the color variations per strand are subtle.
Thread of the Month
Endive
The Gentle Art Endive Thread is dyed in small amounts and is a wonderful collector’s item. This special thread consists of 5 yards or 10 yards of hand-dyed 6-strand 100% cotton embroidery floss.
About Us
Our craftsmen work diligently to produce a product which is consistent, lightfast, colorfast, and has heirloom quality and longevity. As with any hand done process, there are slight variations within each dyelot, and there is a margin for error. However, we are proud to say that ours is small and we strive to minimize it.
